This work was born from a commission received in 2007 from London’s Southbank Centre for its two resident orchestras: the London Sinfonietta, renowned for its focus on contemporary repertoire, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, dedicated to early music. From these premises emerged a project that found its ideal point of departure in Wars I Have Seen, Gertrude Stein’s World War II memoir, in which the American author recounts fragmented episodes of daily life in occupied France: fleeting glimpses of ordinary existence, lived through the dramatic years of war, in a climate of constant tension and anticipation of the inevitable outcome.
